A Horse Is A Horse, Of Course

Lately, after dinner, the girls and I have been going on evening walks through the neighbor - hood to enjoy the warmth of the summer dusk air, the crystal clear skies (now that some of the regional fires have subsided), and the quiet serenity of the golden brown hillsides. We'll usually walk (actually, I push them in a stroller) up a road behind our house to a hilltop overlooking some of the Lafayette valleys and rolling terrain. On the way up the hill there's a horse stable that offers boarding to various owners, as well as a small covered riding arena. We always see horses grazing along equestrian trails or meandering in the fenced areas. (We're also almost guaranteed a deer sighting or two as they seem to have overpopulated our neighborhood and have also managed to munch most of our front yard flowers.) Poppy and I creatively and randomly made up names for all of the horses that we've seen.  Since most of them are either brown or white, the names we've picked are things like Chocolate, Radiant, Icicle and Snowflake. We did actually meet one of the horse owners two nights ago and she has an absolutely gorgeous one named Captain (that's his real name). Although Willow cannot really enunciate words very well, she usually shows her enthusiasm for the animals by wiggling pretty wildly in the stroller while at the same time trying to make the sound of a horsey. This picture was taken this evening right after the sunset while enjoying the view at the top of our destination. While standing there we listened to the shriek of a hawk effortlessly taking advantage of the northwesterly updrafts. These are sweet and simple moments I know I'll never forget. I hope they're moments that Poppy will fondly remember too, and building blocks for a strong bond with Willow.

Warmly in Christ,

Tom
